Our History

Mr. Joseph Chu, and his wife, Ms. Karen Hess, established the Hess Educational Organization in 1983. Over the past 26 years, we have grown from Karen and Joe’s original 60 students to over 60,000 students in our various programs. Such remarkable success and growth has allowed us to become the largest private English educational organization in Taiwan today.

This continuing growth in student and school numbers is accompanied by the development of the Hess Cultural Organization and Hess Charitable Associations. The future of Hess is very bright. Our invaluable role as an educational institute in Taiwan is constantly expanding. We have also stepped out onto the global stage to share our unique East/West educational philosophy and approach with the Hess Education Centre in Singapore, Hess Education Canada, Hess Education Australia, Hess Education International and our Publishing Office in Shanghai.  These endeavors are just the beginning of our international commitment.

Success aside, what really makes our organization special is our people. Our schools, bookstores and offices employ a dynamic staff from Taiwan and around the world. The mission of the Hess Educational Organizations is to perpetually create educational opportunities to improve the capability and well being of the people of Hess.

Learning is a life-long process. We know this and offer classes for people aged two to ninety-two. Each of our educational programs links seamlessly with the next allowing a continuous learning experience that progresses logically, while building on and reinforcing prior knowledge.

After 26 years of experience we have refined our selection and training process to put only the very best teachers in our classrooms. In Hess there is a symbiotic relationship between teaching and curriculum development. The people who design and develop our materials also teach students and train other teachers with them to ensure all of our programs are on target for various learning needs. Being both an educational and publishing company ensures that our teachers use the best methods to teach the most effective materials. We recognize the inseparable relationship between reading and education and, through our bookstores, we can support our students, parents, and the public at large with our education philosophy beyond the classroom.

Our programs include all-in-English and bilingual kindergartens, two streams of elementary school (one each for those who have and haven’t learned English in kindergarten), our junior high school, an excellent e-learning platform, adult and corporate education programs, overseas study tours and services supporting the arrangement of long term overseas study placement.
